World Nursing Conferences 2019 | Advanced Practice Nursing | Cardiac Nursing | Clinical Nursing | Community Nursing and Family Nursing | Dental Nursing | Dermatology Nursing

Advanced practice nursing (APN) is the term used to define a level of #nursing_practice that uses comprehensive skills, experience and knowledge in #nursing_care. The basis of advanced practice is the high degree of knowledge, skill and experience applied in the #nurse patient/client relationship in order to achieve optimal outcomes through critical analysis, problem solving and accurate decision-making.

Track 2: Cardiac Nursing

A cardiac nurse, more commonly referred to as a #cardiac_care_nurse, is a professional who cares specifically for patients who heart problems. While the duties and responsibilities of a #nurse with this title may vary from setting to setting, CCN’s will help to treat patients who have suffered or suffer from congestive heart failure, cardiac dysrhythmia, cardiomyopathy or angina problems. The #nurse may perform stress tests, complete health assessments, care for a patient after an operation, or closely monitor the patient’s heart rate.

#Nurses have always cared for individuals, families and communities in their practice. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of #nurses working outside the hospital, primarily in community-based settings that focus on individuals and families. There is also increasing emphasis on community-focused #nursing_care with the community as the client. Moreover, public concerns regarding quality, cost, access and fragmentation of health care have contributed to a shift in care from the more traditional acute care settings to the community. This has led to changes in #nursing_practice.

Track 5: Dental Nursing

Dental nurses support dentists in the healthcare of patients. Their work includes helping to prepare the dental surgery and ensuring that equipment and working areas are sterile. While the dentist examines and treats a patient, #dental_nurses help by performing tasks such as making sure the patient is comfortable, recording the dentist's observations, passing instruments, using a suction device to remove saliva and debris from the patient's mouth, preparing materials for fillings and sterilization of instruments and infection control procedures. Health and safety for staff and patients is an important part of the dental nurse's role.

Dermatology nursing specialize in the treatment and care of a variety of skin diseases and conditions. Working in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, dermatology clinics and plastic surgeons offices, dermatology nurses provide care for patients with psoriasis, skin cancer, burn wounds and acne among many other skin conditions. The field of dermatology is incredibly vast, as skin is an organ, just like the heart or kidneys and the number of diseases and disorders are just as numerous as with other organs of the body. The majority of #nurses in this field work for private doctor's offices, usually with plastic surgeons or dermatologists. Those that work in plastic surgery offices generally assist with surgical and nonsurgical procedures for cosmetic issues, congenital deformities or injuries. Another professional route to take would be to work for a hospital in the burn ward. This would entail cleaning and dressing the wounds of burn patients, carefully monitoring and controlling pain, ensure patients breathing abilities and prohibiting the spread of infection.

Track 7: Diabetes Nursing

Diabetes nursing care for patients that suffer from diabetes, a condition that affects the body's ability to produce or absorb enough insulin. This includes assisting patients in monitoring their blood sugar and medications, helping to minimize diabetic nerve damage, conducting nutritional therapy, dealing with psychosocial issues and behavioral management. They also spend a considerable amount of time educating patients and families on proper dietary, exercise and lifestyle habits to keep symptoms under control. These #nurses also have a specialized knowledge of the endocrine system, including the hypothalamus, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals, pineal body and the reproductive glands. Diabetes nurses must possess excellent communication skills in order to relay information between patients, physicians, family members and even insurance companies. They must also be compassionate as they are dealing with a disease that is often chronic and can be life threatening. Many diabetes nurses become advocates for diabetes awareness and even go on to become diabetes educators.

Deadline approaches to fund your nursing research through DAISY!

Our Patrick died in 1999 at 33 years old from the auto-immune disease ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura) following eight horrendous weeks in the hospital. We saw for the first time what #nurses do every day — not only the extraordinary clinical skill they apply to patients but also their compassion and kindness for patients and their families.

We were so touched by #nurses’ care we had to say thank you to your extraordinary profession for all Patrick’s #nurses did for us and what you all do every day for patients and families. So we created The DAISY Foundation and The DAISY Award for Extraordinary #Nurses.

We designed this program to encourage staff #nurses, like those who took care of Patrick, to undertake #nursing research and evidence-based practice projects, regardless of their experience. Our goal is to help every applicant get his or her study or project funded.

We urge our applicants to find a local mentor who can provide on-site expertise. Read our goals and guidelines on our website.

What do our successful #nursing research applicants have in common?

First, both novice and experienced researchers read the guidelines carefully and pay attention to the feedback they receive from our reviewers at the letter of intent stage. Our reviewers respond to every letter with guidance about what is expected in the application. Successful applicants ensure they address that feedback specifically.

https://nursingcongress.nursingconference.com/abstract-submission.php
The involvement of clinical staff is critically important to us. Given our goal to inspire #nurses to get involved in #nursing research and evidence-based practice, clinicians need to play a meaningful role in the study. The description of how clinical staff will participate weighs heavily in our decision to fund.

Successful applications tell a story of what the study will accomplish, carefully linking their goals to their methodologies and the outcomes they expect to achieve. We see this as the story’s beginning, middle and end.

Our reviewers approve studies they feel confident can be successfully implemented. That’s why we ask for CVs of the primary investigator and the mentor. CVs assure us the team has the necessary expertise to conduct this work. Also, you can view an excellent webinar conducted by Kelly Brassil, PhD, RN, director of #nursing research and innovation at MD Anderson Cancer Center. One of our previous grantees, Brassil now serves on our grant review panel.

What happens once you receive a J. Patrick Barnes grant?

DAISY is all about relationships. We are proud to partner with you by providing funding for your work, and we hope you are proud of the fact that you have received a grant from The DAISY Foundation.

Yes, there are required reports to be submitted half way through the research timeline and at the study’s completion. But we ask our grantees to stay in touch and let us know how things are going throughout their work.

Finally, nothing is more important to us than the dissemination of your findings once your study is complete. This is why we require you to share your work with Sigma Theta Tau International’s Virginia Henderson Library.

Moreover, we hope you will submit your work for presentation at a relevant conference where you may share your findings. If you are accepted to present, you may apply for a Lynne Doll Grant which will contribute to your travel, poster production, etc. for the #conference.

Lynne was an early DAISY Foundation Board member who loved our grant program. As a prominent public relations executive, she publicized the program and the studies we fund. Lynne died tragically at age 49, and this grant dedicated to dissemination of findings was created in her memory. We urge all our grantees to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

We are committed to supporting #nurses in your effort to ensure your treatment of patients is evidence-based.

We hope you will come to DAISY with your study and give us the opportunity to partner with you by funding it and encouraging you. Letters of intent for our fall funding cycle are due Sept. 5. We look forward to receiving yours!

Advanced Practice Nursing- 53rd Congress on Nursing and health Care

What can I expect from a nursing career?

#Nurses are one of the most trusted groups of professionals in the United States, according to results of an annual survey published by the American Nurses Association.

They represent almost 3 million of the workforce, while there are also more than 700 thousand licensed #practical_nurses (LPN's) in addition to this.

After receiving the required education, #nurses must become licensed in their practicing state and are required to complete continuing education courses to maintain their licensure, depending on their state's regulations.

  • Here are some key points about #nursing. More detail is in the main article.
  • #Nursing is one of the most trusted professions in the U.S., polls show.
  • #Nurses can choose from a wide range of specialties.
  • Qualifications range from a 1-year certificate to a PhD, depending on the role. Most #nurses begin with a science degree.
  • Training can take from 1 to 4 years, depending on the desired entry level.
  • There is an ongoing need for #nurses, resulting in good job security, a competitive salary, and a range of professional opportunities.
What do #nurses do?

#Nurses work in a variety of settings and specialties. They may choose to practice in hospitals, #nursing homes, medical offices, ambulatory care, occupational health, and community health centers, schools, clinics, camps, and shelters.

Specialties

#Nurses perform many professional tasks which may differ based on where they work or what area they specialize in. The American Nurses Association (ANA) lists #nursing responsibilities to include tasks such as:
  • performing physical exams
  • obtaining medical/health histories
  • providing patients with health promotion, counseling and education
  • administering medications, wound care, and other health interventions
  • coordinating patient care collectively with other members of the healthcare team
  • supervising staff such as LPN's and nursing assistants
  • taking part in critical decision making
  • research responsibilities
The degree they hold may also dictate which are of specialty they are competent in practicing in. There are over 100 nursing specialties, including:
  • Ambulatory
  • Burn care
  • Camp or school
  • Diabetes care
  • Emergency #nursing
  • Flight/transport
  • Forensic nursing
  • Geriatrics
  • Home health
  • Hospice
  • Labor and delivery
  • Medical surgical care
  • Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
  • Nephrology
  • Neuroscience
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Pediatrics
  • Psychiatric care
  • Radiology
  • Rheumatology
  • Telemetry
  • Transplant
  • Trauma
  • Wound, ostomy and continence care
Some specialties and practice settings require certain educational criteria such as an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN or ASN), Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN), Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN), ), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP,), Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD), or for legal nursing specialties, a Juris Doctor (JD) may be required. A registered nurse can also earn a specialty certification.

Some #nurses may choose to extend their career by earning a graduate degree to advance their clinical training by going on to receive a master's or doctorate. These #nurses are called Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN's). Some APRN specialties include:

Nurse practitioner (NP): These advanced practitioners work in a variety of specialties and provide comprehensive care to patients. Depending on their state licensing boards, they are able to provide primary and preventative care, diagnose and treat certain conditions, and prescribe certain medications.

#Nurse_practitioner specialties may include acute care, adult health, family health, gerontology, neonatal health, oncology, pediatric or child health, psychiatric or mental health, and women's health. #Nurse_practitioners provide care to patients in settings like hospitals, #nursing_homes, clinics, and private practices.

Certified nurse-midwife (CNM): These advanced practice #nurses are able to provide healthy and non-high risk women with obstetric and gynecologic care. They may practice in settings such as hospitals, birthing centers and patient homes.

Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA): These #advanced_practice_nurses provide anesthesia to patients for surgery or certain procedures.

Clinical nurse specialist (CNS): Experts in an area of #nursing_practice, a CNS may be found working in many settings like hospitals, clinics, nursing home, offices, and within the community.

Becoming a nurse
There are 2 types of nurses, a licensed practical nursing (LPN) or in some states referred to as licensed vocational nursing (LVN) and a registered nurse (RN). Educational requirements vary for each and depend on the degree in which a nurse plans on accelerating their career.

The education that an LPN/LVN or an RN receive differ, as does their scope of practice.

An LPN/LVN receives a 1-year certificate or degree from a vocational or hospital or trade school. They can perform certain #nursing duties, but they are not able to provide the same level of care to patients as an RN. To obtain a license as an LPN, they must take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination or NCLEX-PN.

An LPN/LVN may continue their education and pursue either an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) through bridge programs. These can take anywhere from 2 to 4 years, depending on the chosen degree.

Some RNs choose to obtain an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN), a 2-year technical skill focused program.

There are many ways to enter into a #nursing_career and become an RN, but the preferred degree to obtain is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

This is a 4-year college program. It includes a curriculum based on coursework, lab time, and clinical skill development through a hospital or other medical experience-based program.

In order to practice as a registered nurse, the National Council Licensure Examination or NCLEX-RN must be taken and passed.

How long does it take to become a nurse?
Becoming a nurse can take anywhere from 1 to 4 years, depending on the level of nursing education planned.

LPN/LVN: 1 year
Associates degree RN: 2 years
Bachelor's degree RN: 4 years
#Nurses seeking an advanced degree will require additional education beyond their basic #nursing_education, which can range from two to five years depending on the degree being obtained.

Benefits of a nursing career

In the U.S., there is a growing shortage of nurses. It is anticipated that over a million nursing jobs will be available from 2014 through 2022, with a 16 percent increase in job growth. The #nursing shortage is expected to continue through 2025.

For nurses, this shortage will offer potential job security, an option to advance or change career paths within the scope of #nursing_practice, and advanced education opportunities.

In addition, #nursing currently offers a chance to work in non-traditional work environments, such as schools, government agencies, parks, and offices.

The wide range of specialties means that nursing can appeal to people with varied interests. They can use their #nursing skills in a multitude of practice areas.

The median #registered_nursing salary is expected to be $66,640, in 2016 to 2017, but there are additional ways to increase earnings as a nurse.

For example:
  • working overtime or on-call shifts
  • working in higher paying specialties by gaining certifications and advanced degrees
  • traveling to other higher paying states
  • becoming a nurse educator
#Nursing is a responsible and rewarding career, but it is not always easy. Developing skills such as stress management, listening skills, compassion, and inner strength can help #nurses face the daily challenges of their chosen career path.

For more information on becoming a nurse, visit the American Nursing Association.
