GNM stands for (General Nursing and Midwifery) and focuses on educating nursing students on the topics of general health care and midwifery.

As students develop their education and understanding of general health care over the years they can move on to more specified areas of health care such as pharmacology, childcare, pediatrics, orthopaedics, nutrition, emergency nursing, intensive care and midwifery among other health care fields.

GNM’s may work in a variety of health care settings within both the public and private healthcare sectors and may operate in hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, the armed forces, community centers, health care facilities, and college universities among other health care settings.

In addition to the bachelors program GNM’s may also choose to continue their education in a post-graduate program where they can earn their masters degree and find work in more prominent positions such as management and leadership roles within their profession or they can choose to work in areas related to education and research and development.

Certified Nurse Midwife

Midwifery is a relationship based area of health care that focuses on the fields of women health care, pregnancy and child-birth.

Individuals who train in midwifery have a deep understanding of how the female mind and body works, and focus on developing close (family like) bonds with their patients as they go through their pregnancy and child-birth development phases of becoming and being a mother.

This field of nursing blends art, psychology, modern science and safe practice together to provide women with the best possible health care in a personal and professional manner.

CNM’s help their patients through the entire process of child-birth from the first days as a pregnant mother through the first few months of birth where mothers and their partners are likely to have many questions regarding the best ways to care for their newborn child.

Students who wish to become a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) must first complete a registered nurse program from a board approved nurse midwifery program and earn their certification before being able to work as a CNM.

6 Nurses You Should Know About:

It’s always a perfect time to shine a spotlight on the nation’s almost four million registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. These men and women step up to the plate every day and do the hard work that needs to be done, and they do it with compassion, intelligence, great skill, and finesse. Here are six individuals that are changing the face of health and healthcare through nursing.

1. Susan B. Hassmiller, Ph.D., RN, FAAN works to ensure that America’s nursing workforce is strong and empowered so that we can all live healthier lives. She does this, in part, by directing the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, a 50-state initiative that supports a system in which nurses are essential partners in providing care and promoting health. She is also co-director of the Future of Nursing Scholars program, which provides scholarships, mentoring and leadership development for new nurses as well as nurse educators and researchers. Dr. Hassmiller served with the Health Resources and Services Administration as executive director of the U.S. Public Health Service Primary Care Policy Fellowship. In this role, she addressed national and international healthcare initiatives. She is the recipient of many awards including the Florence Nightingale Medal, the highest international honor given to a nurse by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

2. Robert G. Hess, Jr, Ph.D., RN, FAAN is empowering nurses to be strong and effective advocates for their patients through what is known as shared governance. Patients often assume nurses are empowered to make decisions in their best interest. However, sometimes nurses’ decisions are superseded by managers, administrators, and others far from the point of care who don’t have the expertise or information to coordinate patients’ total care. Shared governance ensures that bedside nurses are true stakeholders and collaborators of care. Dr. Hess is Founder and CEO of the Forum for Shared Governance www.sharedgovernance.org, coauthor of the sole book on implementing shared governance, and the world’s leading researcher on the subject. He is also Executive Vice President, Chief Clinical Executive, for On Course Learning www.oncourselearning.com, Healthcare, the largest provider of continuing education in the world for nurses as well as 23 additional health professions. They publish Nurse.com (formerly Nursing Spectrum and Nurse week) and Continuingeducation.com.

3. Diana J. Mason, Ph.D., RN, FAAN has been a vocal and high-profile advocate for improving health and healthcare by bridging nursing with public policy, politics, and the media – a powerful combination. Dr. Mason is the immediate past president of the American Academy of Nursing – an organization of nurse leaders is former editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Nursing and was co-producer and moderator for many years of Healthstyles, a weekly radio show on health issues. She is now the producer and moderator of HealthCetera in the Catskills, WIOX Radio. Dr. Mason is the lead editor of the award-winning book, Policy and Politics in Nursing and Health Care, now in its seventh edition. Her academic work focuses on health policy and what can be learned from nurse-designed models of care. She is Professor Emerita at Hunter College, City University of New York. She is the Senior Service Policy Professor, Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement, George Washington University School of Nursing.

4. Barbara Glickstein, MPH, MS, RN combines roles as a public health nurse, health policy expert, and broadcast journalist to expand, elevate, and honor the role and image of nurses and advance their vital work to improve health and health care for the public. She is Director of Communications, Media Projects at the Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement at George Washington University School of Nursing. Ms. Glickstein co-produces and hosts the podcast HealthCetera. As a nursing consultant and advisor for Carolyn Jones Productions, she worked on the documentaries The American Nurse, Defining Hope and the multimedia project Dying in America: Nurses Leading the Conversation. Ms. Glickstein has trained national leaders in healthcare on how to be a media maker to advance the health of the public and public policy. She has produced programming for Martha Stewart Radio and completed a Progressive Women’s Voices fellowship with the Women’s Media Center in 2009.

5. Betty Smith Williams, PH, MN, MSN, RN, FAAN has been a leader, mentor, role model, change agent and activist, empowering black and ethnic minority nurses to be leaders in health policy, practice, education, and research. She has also advocated for more accessible and culturally appropriate care for ethnic minorities. Dr. Williams has done this in part by co-founding and serving as president of both the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) and the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations, Inc. (NCEMNA). She became the first black graduate of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University. She also went on to become the first black person to teach at either a college or university in the entire state of California. Dr. Williams has been listed among the 100+ Influential Organization Leaders by Ebony magazine. In 1989, the UCLA School of Public Health established the Betty Smith Williams Scholarship for the graduate education of African American students.

6. Michelle Podlesni, RN is devoted to the empowerment of nurses through entrepreneurship. She is an accomplished businesswoman, U.S. Navy veteran, and nurse with over 30 years’ experience. She is president of the National Nurses in Business Association (NNBA) www.NNBANow.com which is dedicated to advancing and expanding nurse’s role in business. NNBA provides nurses with business education, strategies, and best practices along with an extensive network of colleagues and resources helping nurses navigate the journey to entrepreneurial success. NNBA’s Annual Educational Conference on Nurse Entrepreneurship and Career Alternatives is held each autumn and attended by nurses, business owners, authors, inventors, consultants, educators and those who wish to expand their horizons and opportunities within nursing. Ms. Podlesni and NNBA have assisted thousands of nurses to launch, build, and manage their own businesses.

Nursing and Health Care

Theme: Exploring Innovations and Latest Advancements in Nursing and Health Care

Nursing School: Scholarship opportunities:

Nurses play a critical role in every patient’s life. Individuals encounter nurses from the moment they are born to the moment we take our last breath. The role of a nurse is evolving in healthcare from assessing patients, identifying issues, implementing interventions, and following up on outcomes. These skills are only a fraction of what nurses possess. It’s common to also see nurses as advocates and cheerleaders for patients, helping them strive for better health. These strong, courageous individuals deserve the best education money can buy. If you look far enough, you’ll see the money is out there for you to live out your dream.

Consider scholarships, for example. Many scholarships are based on the particular type of nursing you are interested in, such as rehabilitation nursing or critical-care nursing. Other scholarships may be based on GPA, your amount of courses completed or your level as a student—depending if you’re considered a junior or a senior. Whatever the case, read the fine print carefully. If an essay is to be written, have two or more sets of eyes read it—and make all changes.

What scholarships are available? Take a look at these:

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) offers continuing professional developmental scholarships to students. This scholarship is intended for those who want to go beyond their academic education and continue to learn. Students will have the ability to travel and experience other avenues of nursing, picking up valuable life lessons along the way. Those that apply to this scholarship may also receive a travel fund to help assist in paying for travel-related activities.
American Assembly for Men in Nursing also offers a worthy scholarship for those men that attend nursing school. The student must be a member of the organization, and they must be enrolled in a licensed nursing program. Also, they must have completed at least one year of school before this type of scholarship will be awarded. They offer quite a few different scholarships, but each are worth a close, in-depth look to seek where you save money on your education.

If you live on an Indian reservation, then you may want to check out the Indian Health Service (IHS). This scholarship program is open to American Indian and Alaska Native Americans that are enrolled in nursing programs. Over 7,000 student have received scholarships since it established in 1978. Many of these students have returned to their tribes to work as medical professionals. In order to be awarded this scholarship, students have to agree to a two-year service commitment within an Indian health program, which for many, may be going home after they graduate.

On another note, students may want to check out the Army Nurse Corps. Not only will you get to practice as a medical professional, but you’ll get to travel the world. All they ask of you, as a current student, is that you report for active duty. You’ll be paid a competitive salary and have a bright future serving the country. Also, you may eligible for a sign-on bonus and receive money to pay off your student debt.

Exceptionalnurse.com is another scholarship of which you should apply. This is given to a full-time student that has documented disability. There are various scholarships within this one site. For instance, there is the Anna May Rolando Scholarship. It’s generally given to graduate nursing students whom work with those that have disabilities. There is also the Bruno Rolando Scholarship, which is awarded to a nursing student working at a Veteran’s hospital. The Jill Laura Creedon Scholarship is awarded to a student with a disability or medical challenge, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. These are only a few; there are many others.

The Annual Senior Care Innovation Scholarship is awarded to students who intend to help elderly people. These types of nursing may include occupational therapy, physical therapy or social work. The scholarship will be awarded to a U.S. citizen or a citizen of Canada who is taking classes at an accredited college. All that is needed is an essay on how they will improve the life of seniors. If you’re awarded this scholarship, it’s worth $1,000 toward your nursing education.

Tylenol Future Care Scholarship is a final scholarship not to miss. They are giving away 40 scholarships to students who achieve academic excellence and display a dedication to caring for others. These students may be going to school to work in the maternity nursery or assist a doctor in the emergency room, but it’s important they strive to compassionately help others.

These scholarships are going to help you achieve your goals and dreams within the medical profession. Explore all of them and you’ll be way on your way to a successful career. Nurses are always needed in one capacity or another, and it’s vital they are educated well.

Nursing Conference 2019 | World Nursing Congress

Nursing Conferences 2019 | World Nursing Congress 2019 | 53rd World Congress on Nursing and Healthcare

What is an LPN: Licensed Practical Nurse

What exactly does a licensed practical nurse do? An LPN works under the supervision of doctors and RNs, performing duties such as taking vital signs, collecting samples, administering medication, ensuring patient comfort, and reporting the status of their patients to the nurses.

Another title provided is "registered practical nurse" (RPNs) in the Canadian province of Ontario.

A person can generally become an LPN with two years of training; all U.S state and territorial boards also require passage of the NCLEX-PN exam. In Canada, the education program ranges from two to three years of post-secondary and students must pass the intensive Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE).

What does an LPN Do?

The roles of this job are similar to the duties of an RN. According to Rasmussen, typical job duties will include:
  • Monitoring basic patient health such as vital signs and overall condition
  • Changing dressings or inserting catheters
  • Taking patient histories and maintaining documentation
  • Assisting with tests or procedures
  • Providing such aged personal care,  helping with bathing and toileting
  • Consulting with RNs on care plans
Are LPNs and LVNs the same?

While duties may vary slightly depending on your employer, LPNs and LVNs are essentially the same thing—the difference is the name and the state where you work. A licensed vocational nurse is the title used in Texas and California, while licensed practical nurse is used in the rest of the United States.

Where they work

They can both be employed in the same types of places – hospitals, nursing homes, etc. The biggest difference is that a vocational nurse will need to be supervised by an RN at any of these places.

Here are some typical job locations:
  • Nursing home
  • Hospital
  • Home health care
  • Doctor’s Offices
  • Rehabilitation Center
  • Military Bases
Can LPNs specialize?

LPN education often covers a wide variety of topics, so you can leave your program with knowledge and skills in many areas. Specialization isn’t required, but you might choose to focus your career by gaining certification through a state organization or the National Association of Practical Nurse Education and Services (NAPNES). You can specialize in areas like IV therapy, long-term care, pharmacology, correctional health, and developmental disabilities.

Avoid untruths in your nursing documentation

A reader submitted a question about nurse managers in a home health agency documenting the start and stop times for IV infusions. The nurse managers did not administer the IVs. The reason this practice occurred was so the nurse managers could be paid for the infusions.

A long-standing, essential principle of nursing documentation is that it be truthful and accurate. Moreover, you as a nurse are responsible for your own documentation. If you document for another, you must alert the reader of that fact by indicating you are doing so for the identified nurse (by name) and then signing your name after the notation.

If these legal and ethical standards are not met, the documentation that takes place is considered false, untrue, misleading and deceitful.

How much of a delay occurs due to this practice is one concern. The other is how the nurse manager is indicating the start and stop dates in the record.

Are the entries backdated? In other words, if an IV was stopped on Wednesday, Jan. 12, is the entry dated as such even though the documentation took place on Jan. 16, or is it entered on the day the nurse manager actually documents the stop date, indicating it as a “late entry” or as an “addition to the notation” pursuant to the agency’s documentation policies?

Another instance of legal inaccuracy is if the nurse manager backdates the notation. If, on the other hand, the nurse manager dates the start and stop dates truthfully but indicates the actual date of the entry as well, that is legally acceptable.

It may not be acceptable, however, for the insurance company who is paying for those IVs, whether its Medicare, Medicaid or a private insurance company.
As a result, not only is the nurse manager falsifying the record, the practice may result in a non-payment by the insurance company for the IV because it was not documented timely.

One last legal problem raised by the reader’s question is that the nurse managers were falsely documenting so they could be paid for the infusion.
Does this statement mean the nurse managers personally were being paid as a result of their visit and documentation? Or does it mean the agency was being paid for the visit? Unclear, to be sure, but still troubling.

It is important that as a nurse license you never falsify nursing documentation or any document in relation to your nursing practice.

Your inability to practice nursing with an unencumbered license is but one ramification if you do so. Another consequence is that your veracity will be severely compromised, a result that will follow you for the rest of your professional life.
